Details:

At 21:38 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the 92ft Tall Ship Spirit of Falmouth which had reported having engine problems while in a position 4 miles East of Zone Point and was unable to make way due to the light airs. Two other sailing vessels that accompanied the Tall Ship were standing by the vessel.

The All Weather Lifeboat which left its pontoon berth at 21:47 and having rounded Zone Point headed east arriving on scene at 22:20. A tow line was passed to the vessel and at 22:30 the tow back into Falmouth commenced. Once off the docks, the Tall Ship was strapped alongside the lifeboat before heading into the inner harbour where the vessel was safely secured alongside at Port Pendennis Marina at 23:35. The All Weather Lifeboat recovered its gear and at 00:00 it was released to return to its station.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth at 00:05, with the lifeboat being refuelled and ready for service by 00:15.

The Tall Ship belongs to the Falmouth based charity Turn to Starboard who use sailing to help Armed Forces personnel and their families make the right turn in their lives. The vessel had just left Falmouth on the Round Britain Challenge 2016 which will see a team of veterans sail 2,000 miles around the British Isles. The vessel had suffered a gear box failure and it is hoped following repairs that the vessel and its crew will soon resume its journey and the lifeboat crew wish them the best with their challenge.
