Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Mark Pollard (Coxswain), Snowy Angove, Alan Rowe, Alistair Heane, Phil Rogers, John Lower Marc Thomas, Tom Napper Location: Mjn-aver Point, near Gillan Creek Shout Date: 06/08/2006 (All day) Weather:NW 4, Moderate Sea, Good Visibility, Sunny Periods At 18:08 Falmouth Coastguard received a Mayday Call from the 34ft Yacht Shumba reporting that she had run aground to the west of Nare Head and required assistance as she had a ten degree list. Both Falmouths Inshore and All Weather Lifeboats were alongside Custom House Quay for the stations annual Quayside Service and were requested to proceed. The Inshore Lifeboat departed the quay at 18:10 and made best possible speed to the casualtys position. The All Weather Lifeboat left the quay shortly afterwards, but at reduced speed due to the volume of traffic in the harbour. The Inshore Lifeboat arrived on scene at 18:19 and located the yacht at Mjn-aver Point, the same location that the Yacht Saraphina had run aground on the 30 July. The inshore lifeboat made a quick assessment of the situation and confirmed that the yacht was not taking water. A women and her son were taken off the yacht and transferred to the All Weather Lifeboat when it arrived on scene at 18:25. The Inshore Lifeboat then returned to the yacht and placed a crewman onboard. A line was connected to the yachts masthead via the main halyard and by gently healing the fin keel yacht over the inshore lifeboat was able to pull the yacht off the rocks and clear of danger. The yacht was then placed alongside the all weather lifeboat while it was confirmed that there was no water ingress. The women and her son then returned to the yacht and the inshore lifeboat towed it back to its mooring in the Helford River while the All Weather Lifeboat was released to return to station at 18:38. The yacht had been leaving Parbean Cove when she it had hit the submerged ledge. The tide was ebbing but luckily the quick response by the lifeboats enabled the yacht to be refloated with minimum damage. The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 19:07. The lifeboat was then refuelled, and was ready for service by 19:25.
