Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Mark Pollard (Coxswain), John Blakeston, Snowy Angove, Alan Rowe, Alistair Heane, Nick Lewis, Andy Jenkin Location: August Rock Shout Date: 24/05/2009 - 22:25 Weather:N 3, Slight Sea & Swell, Good Visibility, Partly Cloudy ![]() At 22:15 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the 40ft Yacht Sagamore which had reported being aground on August Rock, at the entrance to the Helford River. Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 22:25 and headed across the bay arriving on scene with the yacht at 22:45. The yacht was already well aground and healing over so the Lifeboat’s small inflatable Y-Boat was launched and recovered the two occupants back to the Lifeboat so that the situation could be discussed. As the tide was still ebbing it was decided to anchor the lifeboat and run a towline to the yacht and to then wait for the tide to rise. The yacht was refloated at 02:45 and having eased her into deeper water she was checked over for any damage before its owners motored her back into Falmouth with the Lifeboat acting as an escort. The yacht was safely tied up in the Port Pendennis Marina at 04:57 and the Lifeboat was released to return to station. The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 05:10. The lifeboat was then refuelled, and was ready for service by 05:25. The yacht had passed inside of the August Rock Buoy and had struck the reef. With a falling tide the yacht had been unable to get herself clear of the rocks and had called for assistance.
