Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Alan Barnes (Coxswain), Snowy Angove, David Proud, Mark Pollard, Phil Rogers, Diane Bush, Andy Jenkins, Oliver Lewis Location: August Rock, at entrance to Helford River Shout Date: 12/06/2004 (All day) Weather:NNW 4, Slight Sea, Good Visibility, Sunny Enter Action here...At 20:34 Falmouth Coastguard requested that both the Falmouth Inshore and All Weather Lifeboats be launched to assist the 36ft Yacht Cornish Air, which had put out a Mayday call following hitting August Rock at the entrance to the Helford River. The yacht, which had four people onboard, was taking water and was in danger of sinking. A rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose was also tasked to assist. The All Weather Lifeboat left her berth at 20:41 and arrived on scene at 20:53. The Inshore Lifeboat had already put two crewmembers onboard to assess the situation, and having identified the main point of water ingress they had taken temporary measures to stem the flow. As soon as the All Weather Lifeboat arrived on scene the yacht was strapped alongside the lifeboat and the salvage pump was transferred to try and reduce the volume of water onboard. The slow process of heading back towards Falmouth began and as the lifeboat approached the harbour HMS Enterprise which was moored alongside the docks offered additional assistance. Once the yacht was alongside HMS Enterprise the work to stem the flow continued, until arrangements could be made to get the yacht lifted out of the water at the Port Pendennis Ship Yard. The yacht was finally hauled out of the water at 23:30 its crew returning to the lifeboat station onboard the All Weather Lifeboat. The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 23:51, where it was ready for service by 00:15.
