Boat: Inshore Lifeboat
Crew: Dave Nicoll (Helmsman), Marc Thomas, Tom Bird
Location: Restronguet Point, Carrick Roads
Shout Date: 21/06/2008 (All day)
Weather:S 4, Slight Sea & Swell, Poor Visibility, Overcast with Heavy Drizzle

At 01:26 Falmouth Coastguard requested that the Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat be launched to standby the 44ft Yacht Bertie and its seven crew who had reported being aground and listing at Restronguet Point. The tide was still ebbing and the skipper was concerned that the yacht might take water when it refloated.

The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 01:32 and headed up the Carrick Roads at the best speed possible it the prevailing conditions. The inshore lifeboat was alongside the yacht at 01:40 and having assessed that the yacht was stable tied up alongside to await the tide to turn at 01:53.

Once the tide starting flooding the yacht started to right itself and at 02:50 although the yacht was still aground its skipper was happy for the lifeboat crew to be released as the danger had passed.

The Inshore Lifeboat was back on its slipway by 03:02 where it was refuelled, rehoused and was ready for service by 03:20.

The yacht was on charter from Plymouth with a well experienced skipper and crew. They had been visiting the Pandora Inn and had picked up a mooring off Restronguet Point for the evening with the intention of heading onto Penzance the following day. They had been rudely awaken in the early hours when the cutlery draw had fallen out, this being the first sign of what developed into a 35 degree list. It appears that the mooring was right on the edge of the deep water pool and that the yacht had swung onto the bank during the night and gone aground on the ebbing tide. The skipper and crew had wisely put on their lifejackets and gone on deck, before advising the coastguard and awaiting further assistance.
