At 19:34 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the 8m Catamaran Kristeen of Gweek with two persons on board which had reported via a 999 call that it was broken down and unable to sail in a position 8 miles ENE of Zone Point.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 19:45 and having rounded Zone Point headed up to the East arriving on scene at 21:20. The yacht was located using Radar and a strobe light on the vessel. A tow line was passed to the vessel and at 21:28 the tow back to Falmouth commenced. On entering Falmouth Inner Harbour the vessel was placed on a visitors mooring off Greenbank at 23:40, the lifeboat then being released to return to its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat arrived back alongside its pontoon berth at 23:45 where it was refuelled and ready for service by 00:05.
The Catamaran had been on passage from Falmouth to Fowey under its engine as its mast was strapped to its deck. Its engine had failed and occupants had used their mobile phone to raise the alarm as they did not have a VHF radio. Unfortunately the vessel was in a poor state of repair and should not have been carrying out such a passage unaccompanied.
