Yacht Tamsin requiring assistance
Monday 1 August 2016
Location: Off Coverack Harbour
Weather: SW 6, Rough Sea and Moderate Swell, Poor Visibility, Overcast with Rain
All-weather lifeboat (Tasked 14:57 / Returned 17:10) John Blakeston (Coxswain), Luke Wills, Dave Nicoll, Diane Bush, Jonathan Hackwell, Jamie Connoly, Adrian Hingston
During the search for three missing divers the Lizard Lifeboat spotted a yacht near Coverack Harbour that was anchored on a lee shore. On termination of the search the Lizard Lifeboat went to check on the 8m yacht Tamsin with two persons on board which it was confirmed had suffered engine failure. In view of the prevailing weather conditions Falmouth Coastguard requested at 14:57 that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat proceed to take the yacht in tow back to Falmouth.
The All Weather Lifeboat arrived on scene at 15:04 and passed a tow line to the yacht, taking the weight so the skipper could recover the anchor. At 15:12 the tow back to Falmouth was commenced. The lifeboat entered Falmouth Inner Harbour at 16:48 where the yacht was transferred alongside the lifeboat. The yacht was then taken to the pontoons at Falmouth Haven, where at 16:59 the yacht was safely moored before at 17:05 the lifeboat was released to return to its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth at 17:10, where the lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service by 17:25.
The yacht had been on passage to the Isles of Scilly and had anchored off Coverack when it developed engine problems. Being on a lee shore with an increasing South Westerly wind and associated swell, the skipper had accepted the offer of a tow back to Falmouth.
