At 13:58 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth Offshore Lifeboat be launched after a report of a surfer in difficulties about a mile offshore from Maenporth. The wind at the time was gusting to 64 knots with a rough sea, and heavy swell and conditions were in excess of the operating limits of the stations Inshore Lifeboat. The Falmouth Coastguard Mobile was also tasked to carry out a visual search from a vantage point.

The Offshore Lifeboat left her berth at 14:12 and commenced her search of the area between Meanporth and Swanpool at 14:19. A thorough search of the area was carried out but there was no sign of the surfer who had originally been believed to be in difficulties. The search area had stretched from Maenporth to Pendennis Point and at 15:18 the Offshore Lifeboat, and Coastguard Mobile were released to return to their stations.

The Offshore Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 15:32, where it was refuelled and ready for service by 15:45.
