The Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat had just left its pontoon for an evening exercise when at 19:10 Falmouth Coastguard requested that the lifeboat divert to assist in a search following a number of reports of Red Flares being sighted over the Penryn River. The Falmouth Coastguard mobile was also tasked to assist.

The search was commenced from Coastlines Wharf at 19:18, the lifeboats inflatable Y-Boat being put in the water to search the top end of the river, while the all weather lifeboat concentrated its search between Coastlines Wharf and Ponshardon. A thorough search of the river was carried out from the land and sea with nothing found. At 20:21 the search was called off and the lifeboat was released to continue its exercise.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 21:00 were it was refuelled, and was ready for service by 21:15.

There have been a number of similar reports of Red Flares being fired in the Penryn River area during May. It is believed that these are being fired from the shore and further investigation is being carried out by the Police and Coastguard, which will hopefully result in those responsible being held to account for their actions.
