At 14:15 Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat was heading out of the harbour on a training exercise when Falmouth Coastguard requested that the lifeboat divert to assist in the search for a distress signal from an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). The satellite had indicated that a 121.5Mhz signal had been picked up centred on the Carrick Roads & Falmouth Bay area.

The All Weather Lifeboat commenced its search at 14:16, using its own Radio Direction Finding equipment. The source of the signal was pin pointed as coming from the area of Falmouth Docks and as the lifeboat approached that area at 14:31 the Research Vessel Ocean Researcher which was moored in the Docks advised Falmouth Coastguard that it had inadvertently activated one of its Man Overboard Beacons during a routine drill.

The All Weather Lifeboat was therefore released to continue with its training exercise.
