At 18:35 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the Royal Navy in a search for a possible man-overboard 20 miles SE of Falmouth.

The All Weather Lifeboat left her berth at 18:45 and proceeded to the original search area where a number of naval vessels were already carrying out an extensive search. Shortly after arriving on scene at 19:05, one of the naval vessels reported losing contact with its Lynx Helicopter, which had been on its way to join in the search. The lifeboat was immediately diverted to assist in the search for the helicopter and its four crew. Later that evening debris from the helicopter was located with in the search area, and despite a major search involving numerous naval ships, helicopters and the lifeboat, no sign of any survivors was found. At 00:30 the lifeboat was released from the search, and headed back to station

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 01:25, where it was ready for service by 02:00.
