Boat: Inshore Lifeboat Crew: Mark Waters (Helmsman), Tom Bird, Jonathon Hackwell Location: Helford Village Regatta Shout Date: 25/08/2007 (All day) Weather:SE 3, Slight Sea and Swell, Good Visibility, Sunny Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat was attending the annual Helford Village Regatta in the Helford River, when at 15:29 a competitor in one of the rowing races was taken ill. The Coastguard Mobile, which was also attending the event, requested an ambulance while the inshore lifeboat crew and a member of St Johns Ambulance provided immediate first aid. At 15:42 an ambulance paramedic arrived on scene and while the lifeboat crew continued CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) he worked on the casualty using a defibrillator. The Cornwall Air Ambulance had also been tasked but the nearest landing site was adjacent to the Sailing Club Car Park so with all efforts continuing to resuscitate the casualty he was moved in the back of a small vehicle to the landing site. At 16:05 the casualty was in the air ambulance and on his way to hospital but sadly despite everyones efforts it proved impossible to save the casualty. The casualty was a well-known local person who had been involved with the Helford Village Regatta for many years, and was know to many of the crew and local coastguards. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.
