Boat: Inshore Lifeboat Crew: Luke Wills (Helmsman), Jonathan Hackwell, Adam West Location: Near Crab Quay, Pendennis Point Shout Date: 15/08/2011 - 09:09 Weather:S 3, Slight Sea and Swell, Good Visibility, Partly Cloudy ![]() At 09:09 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat be launched following a report from a member of the public that a person had fallen into a gully just below the Coastguard Station near Crab Quay on Pendennis Point. The Falmouth Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team and an Ambulance were also tasked along with James Instance the Rescue Coordination Centre Manager. The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 09:15 and arrived on scene at 09:19. The casualty was located in the shallow water of the gully being assisted by the RCC Manager who is also an RNLI volunteer lifeguard. A crewman was dropped into the gully to assess the situation while the Inshore Lifeboat picked up the paramedic off the rocks. The lifeboat was then skilfully manoeuvred into the gully to assist in the recovery of the casualty. Once the casualty had extracted from the water and placed on the inshore lifeboat and was taken back to the lifeboat station where at 09:57 he was transferred to a waiting ambulance. The Inshore Lifeboat was back on its slipway by 10:15 where it was refuelled, rehoused and was ready for service by 10:30. The incident had happened when the casualty had been preparing the flags on the start line marker on Pendennis Point. Some how he had slipped backwards into the gully, falling a distance of 25-30ft. Luckily he landed in very shallow water which helped cushion his fall, suffering a badly broken ankle and significant bruising, but his injuries could have been far worse.
