Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Mark Pollard (Coxswain), John Blakeston, Phil Rogers, Tom Bird, Oliver Lewis, Andy Jenkin, Luke Wills, Claire Angove Location: Gerrans Bay Shout Date: 23/07/2007 (All day) Weather:N 5, Moderate Sea and Swell, Good Visibility, Overcast At 21:38 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist in the search for a person believed to be in difficulties in Gerrans Bay. The Inshore Lifeboat and Portscatho Coastguard Mobile had already been tasked and due to the failing light the All Weather Lifeboat and a Helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were also requested. Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 21:45 and headed out of the harbour. The inshore lifeboat soon located a lobster pot marker in the area where the casualty had been reported, and at 21:50 the Coastguard Mobile was able to confirm with the first informants that this was the right location. The Inshore Lifeboat carried out a quick check of the area before all the units were released at 21:55. The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 22:05. The lifeboat was then refuelled, and was ready for service by 22:15. The particular pot marker in question had an unusual combination of float markers that could easily have been mistaken for something else in the failing light and southerly swell. This was certainly a case of a false alarm with good intent.
