Falmouth Severn Class All Weather Lifeboat - RNLB Richard Cox Scott (17-29)

At 09:15 as the crew of Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat were preparing to go on exercise Falmouth Coastguard requested that the Lifeboat be launched to assist the 16ft Motor Boat Red Square with four people onboard which had reported being broken down in Falmouth Bay.

Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 09:21 and located the Red Square 2.5 miles South of Pendennis Point close to one of the Merchant Vessels in Falmouth Bay at 09:35. Once on scene three of the casualties were transferred to the lifeboat before a towline was connected and the tow back to Mylor Harbour commenced at 09:39.

At 10:59 the All Weather Lifeboat and Red Square were off Mylor Harbour and the tow was transferred to the Mylor Harbour Launch, which then towed the boat back to the slipway at Mylor so they could recover their boat. The Lifeboat was then released to continue with its exercise.

The All Weather Lifeboat was finally back alongside its pontoon berth by 12:00. The lifeboat was then refuelled, and was ready for service by 12:20.

The four people onboard the Red Square had launched in the early hours of the morning from Mylor Harbour for a days fishing but had broken down off St Anthony Lighthouse. Having tried to rectify the problem and with a number of them suffering seasickness they eventually decided to ask for assistance. By the time the lifeboat reached them they were in danger of being blown down onto one of the Merchant Vessels in the bay.
