At 12:08 Falmouth Coastguard was contacted by the Norwegian Tanker Jo Eik (149m / 12,249 GRT) reporting that she was South West of The Lizard and had a crewman onboard with head injuries. Following medical advise the vessel was requested to turn around and head for Falmouth Bay where Falmouth Lifeboat would be launched to evacuate the casualty. Once the vessel had confirmed that it would be off Falmouth at 16:00, Falmouth Coastguard then requested that Falmouth Lifeboat be launched at a suitable time to rendezvous with the vessel.

The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 15:33, and rendezvoused with the vessel in Falmouth Bay at 15:53. Once a harbour pilot had boarded the vessel form the pilot boat, considering the weather conditions an excellent lee was provided for the lifeboat and at 15:55 a first aider was placed onboard the vessel to assess the casualties condition of the casualty. It was soon apparent that the casualtys injuries were more serious than had been originally thought. At 15:59 after discussion with the master of the vessel and the coastguard it was decided that in the prevailing weather conditions that a helicopter evacuation was the preferred option. The helicopter arrived on scene at 16:13, and once the casualty had been winch up into the helicopter, the lifeboatman was transferred back onto the lifeboat, which then headed back to station.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 17:04 and was then refuelled, and ready for service by 17:30.
