Falmouth Severn class all weather lifeboat - RNLB Richard Cox Scott (17-29)

Shortly after midday while returning from exercise Falmouth Lifeboat reported to Falmouth Coastguard that they had heard a faint Mayday call requesting an ambulance. Having played back their tapes Falmouth Coastguard confirmed that they had also received a very weak message on their Falmouth radio mast which included the word Truro. At 12:12 both the Inshore and All Weather Lifeboats were tasked to assist in the search for the source of the call. The Falmouth Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team was also tasked to assist.

The All Weather Lifeboat which was in Falmouth Bay started to make its way up the Carrick Roads and was just approaching the King Harry Ferry when at 12:32 the Coastguard advised that they had received additional information which led them to believe that the call might have come from the Penryn River area so they tasked the Inshore Lifeboat to search the Penryn River while the All Weather Lifeboat was asked to continue up the River Fal. At 12:47 as the All Weather Lifeboat had just passed Tolverne when the Coastguard confirmed that the source of the Mayday had been established and no further action was required so all units could return to their stations.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 13:15. The lifeboat was then refuelled, and was ready for service by 13:30.

It turned out that the call had been made from a property in Penryn and that the person involved had been taken to hospital by ambulance. It is not know why the initial call was made by VHF radio but it was a genuine call for help.
