Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Alan Barnes (Coxswain), Peter Wood, Tim Julian, John Murray, Snowy Angove, David Proud, Dave Nicoll, Alan Rowe, Phil Rogers, Carl Beardmore Location: 1 Mile East of Zone Point Shout Date: 20/10/2002 - 11:27 Weather:SE 8-9, Very Rough Sea, Fair Visibility, Overcast with Rain At 11:27 Falmouth Offshore and Inshore Lifeboats were on exercise in Falmouth Harbour when Falmouth Coastguard requested that they be tasked to assist in the location of the 26ft Yacht Pitit Manuelle following concern for its safety. Shortly afterwards at 11:32 Falmouth Coastguard received a Mayday Call from the Pitit Manuelle reporting a man overboard, the yachts position being off St Anthony Lighthouse. A Helicopter from RNAS Culdrose and the Portscatho and Falmouth Coastguard Cliff Teams were also tasked to assist in the search. The Offshore Lifeboat arrived on scene at 11:36 and commenced a search upwind of the yachts position, while the Inshore Lifeboat transferred a crewmember to the yacht to obtain further details. It soon became apparent that the yacht had been on passage from Fowey to Falmouth and that the man had been lost overboard while crossing Gerrans Bay. The Offshore Lifeboat therefore started a search to the east of Zone Point while the Inshore Lifeboat was requested to escort the yacht into Falmouth where an Ambulance had been arranged to treat the remaining crew member on the yacht. At 11:49 the Helicopter joined the search, and at 11:53, just as the Offshore Lifeboat was passing Killigerran Head, a lifebuoy was spotted, which the Inshore Lifeboat soon confirmed had been thrown to the casualty after he was knocked overboard. The search was then concentrated in this area, and sadly at 12:44 a body was located in the water about one mile south of Killigerran Head. Sea conditions were so poor that the Lifeboat requested that the Helicopter assist in the recovery the body, which was completed at 12:55. The Offshore Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 13:13, where it was refuelled and ready for service by 13:40.
