At 13:16 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat be launched following reports of a fire on board the 34ft yacht Callico II in the Helford River. Various units from the Fire Brigade along with the Harbour Launch were also requested to assist.
The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 13:23 and headed across Falmouth Bay arriving in the Helford at 13:35. The yacht was located anchored close to The Grew rock on the south side of the river. The skipper reported that he believed that the fire had been extinguished by the boats fire fighting system. The skipper and crewmember were taken off the yacht and landed ashore while fire fighters were taken out to the yacht to check that the fire had been extinguished. Once this was confirmed the fire fighters were taken ashore and the occupants returned to their yacht. The vessel was then towed to its mooring in Port Navas Creek where it was safely secured at 14:46, the inshore lifeboat being released to return to its station.
The Inshore Lifeboat was back on its slipway at 15:15 where it was refuelled, rehoused and ready for service by 15:30.
On investigation it was found that the yacht had suffered an electrical fire which had created a high volume of smoke. The skipper had wisely stopped his boat in a clear area, requested assistance and had then dropped the vessels anchor to await assistance
