Boat: All Weather Lifeboat Crew: Alan Barnes (Coxswain), Peter Wood, Mark pollard, Alan Rowe, Phil Rogers, Mark Waters, Luke Tudor, Andy Jenkins Location: Off Ponsharden, Penryn River Shout Date: 10/08/2004 (All day) Weather:SE 4, Slight Sea, Good Visibility, Sunny Periods At 14:05 Falmouth Coastguard requested that both Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat and Inshore Lifeboat be launched following a report of people in the water following an explosion and fire onboard a small motorboat moored off Ponsharden, in the Penryn River. A Rescue Helicopter from RNAS Culdrose, Falmouth Coastguard Mobile, Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance were also tasked. The All Weather Lifeboat left her berth at 14:16. As the Inshore Lifeboat arrived on scene at 14:15 it was confirmed that the two people had been taken from the water by a local boat and were being treated by Paramedics. Once the All Weather Lifeboat had arrived on scene at 14:33 the fire onboard the 18ft motorboat was extinguished, and the Inshore Lifeboat then towed the craft into the shallow water at Ponsharden as it was in danger of sinking. At 14:56 the Inshore Lifeboat was requested to remain on scene to assist in the recovery of the vessel while the All Weather Lifeboat was released to return to station. At 15:10 the police raised concerns that a third person may have been involved in the incident so the Inshore Lifeboat carried out another search of the area but 15:18 it was confirmed that all casualties had been accounted for, and the Inshore Lifeboat was also released to return to station. The casualties, a father and his 9-year-old son had suffered extensive burns and were flown by helicopter to Treliske Hospital, before being later transferred to the specialist burns unit in Bristol. The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 15:10, where it was ready for service by 15:30.
