At 16:28 Falmouth Coastguard requested that both Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat and Offshore Lifeboat be launched to assist the crew of the Diving RIB Scavenger which had reported that it was sinking near the Manacle Rocks. A Rescue Helicopter from RNAS Culdrose and the Porthoustock Coastguard Mobile were also tasked to assist.

The Helicopter arrived on scene at 16:39 and at 16:41 reported that they had sighted two people in the water and were about to commence winching them onboard, the boat having sunk. The Offshore Lifeboat left her berth at 16:42. The Inshore Lifeboat arrived on scene at 16:45 just as the Helicopter was about to winch the second casualty from the water. Shortly afterwards the Helicopter confirmed that both casualties and the dog were safely onboard and that they would be taken to Treliske Hospital for a check up as they were cold and in a state of shock. As the Scavenger had sunk the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked to recover the all the floating debris including various items of Diving Equipment, and at 16:48 the Offshore Lifeboat was released to return to station as its services were no longer required.

The Scavenger had reported hitting a submerged object while crossing Mounts Bay earlier in the afternoon, but after advising the coastguard, the crew had decided to continue back to Falmouth. As they passed the Manacles they had slowed down to change fuel tanks and the RIB started to sink by its stern, ending up with just the bow showing above the water. Shortly afterwards the sponson burst and the RIB sank leaving its crew in the water.

The Offshore Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 17:00, where it was refuelled and ready for service by 17:10.
