At 14:56 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist other units already involved in the search for a diver reported missing six miles south of The Lizard Point. The Lizard Lifeboat had arrived on scene at 15:00 and was joined by HMS Somerset which had been operating to the East of the Lizard, along with a Rescue Helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. The Penlee Lifeboat had also been launched to assist arriving on scene at 15:26.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 15:02 and headed out across Falmouth Bay rounding the Manacle Buoy at 15:28. Shortly afterwards the Falmouth Lifeboat was released to return to its station when it was confirmed that the diver had been spotted on the surface by the Warship HMS Somerset and was recovered by his Dive Boat. The casualty was then winched on board the helicopter and taken to the Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth to be checked over.
The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 16:13 where the lifeboat was refuelled and was ready for service by 16:40.
The diver had been exploring a wreck in 80m of water to the south of the Lizard when he had been reported missing. The well-equipped diver had been carrying a Personal Location Beacon which had assisted in pin pointing his position. The diver had completed his decompression stops but was taken to DDRC as a precaution.
