At 22:40 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to evacuate a casualty who had fallen down the companionway of the 15m Yacht Summer Wind III which was at anchor off Custom House Quay in Falmouth Inner Harbour.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 22:50 and arrived on scene at 22:54. Two casualty care trained lifeboat crewmembers were placed on board the yacht to assess the casualty’s condition. The casualty who had potentially suffered back and pelvic injuries was immobilised and placed in a stretcher before being transferred to the All Weather Lifeboat. Her husband and a child were also taken on board the lifeboat to accompany the casualty and at 23:46 the lifeboat headed back to its station, arriving at its pontoon berth at 23:52 where they were met by two paramedics. The casualty was given further treatment on board the lifeboat before being transferred ashore into an ambulance at 00:20.
Once the casualty was ashore all the equipment was recovered and stowed, the All Weather Lifeboat being ready for service by 00:45.
The yacht had been anchored off the quay when the casualty had fallen. In view of the nature of the injuries, the difficulty of extraction of the casualty from below decks and the need for a stable platform it was decided to use the All Weather Lifeboat.
