At 13:33 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the inshore lifeboat with a catamaran, which had capsized = mile South of Zone Point. The inshore lifeboat had requested the lifeboats backup as soon as it had arrived on scene. Two dive boats in the area had also gone to assist following a Mayday broadcast and had recovered the three casualties from the upturned hull.

The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 13:39, and arrived on scene at 13:53. The inshore lifeboat then transferred the three casualties to the all weather lifeboat where they were given warm clothes and treated for shock. A rope bridle was placed onboard the catamaran by the inshore lifeboat crew, which was then used by the all weather lifeboat to right the catamaran.

Crew members and the salvage pump were then put onboard the casualty to stabilise it and prevent it from sinking. It was then strapped alongside the lifeboat while the whole crew worked to remove the broken mast and rigging before preparing the catamaran for towing back into harbour. At 17:04 after over three hours of difficult work, the lifeboat commenced its tow back to Falmouth, where the casualty was safely moored alongside the Port Pendennis Marina at 18:05.

The three-man crew of the catamaran had been taking part in a race from Plymouth to Falmouth when they had been caught by a strong gust, causing the vessel to capsize, and trapping them in the cockpit of the catamaran. Luckily they managed to free themselves and swim clear before climbing onto the upturned hull.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 18:10 and was then refuelled, and ready for service by 18:30.
