Press Releases

Doctor Richard James, the Falmouth Lifeboat Medical Officer, received a letter of thanks and a statuette of a life boatman, from the Chief Executive of the RNLI, Andrew Freemantle, CBE, in recognition of his valuable service to the Falmouth lifeboats. Bernard Fox, the Falmouth Lifeboat Station Chairman, made the presentation.

Dr James, who is a GP at Falmouth Health Centre, has been associated with Falmouth Lifeboat Station since 1990. Some 15 years ago, he was appointed the Deputy Honorary Medical Advisor, as they were then known, and upon the retirement of Dr. Philip Slater, Dr. James became the Falmouth Lifeboat Medical Officer. Over the years he has assisted with the training of the crews in first aid, been called out on numerous shouts, and carried out the necessary medical examinations for the lifeboat crew members.

One of the more memorable shouts attended by Dr. James was in June 2006, when a crewman on the fishing boat Danielle, some 17 miles to the south east of Falmouth, got his arm caught in a winch, which subsequently required an amputation at RCH Treliske.
