Lifeboat Falmouth

FALMOUTH LIFEBOAT STATION

The station was established by the Institution in 1867 as the result of several wrecks occurring in the vicinity.

1829 RNLIs Gold medal awarded to William Brook for the rescue by means of an open boat of eleven persons from the Brig Larch on 7th. January 1828.

1831 Voted Gold medal to Lt.W.Jones RN for the rescue of the crew of ten of the French Brig Le Bon Pere. Lt.Jones swam to the vessel for a rope.

1916 Voted Silver medals to Lt.Frank Stevens RNR and 2nd Lt.E.Badger RN who at great personal risk launched a 12ft.dingy in rough seas to save a seaman who had jumped into the sea off a sinking vessel.

1940 Silver medal awarded to Coxswain Snell, Bronze medal to motor mechanic Charles Williams. The remaining six crew members awarded the RNLIs Thanks on Vellum. These awards were made in connection with the rescue of 35 men from the steamer Kirkpool.

1967 Framed Letters of Thanks to Coxswain Bert West, Assistant Mechanic Ronald Twydle and Shore Signalman Cyril Barnicot. Awarded in connection with rescue of French trawler Martime Jeal Paul.

1972 Bronze medals awarded to Coxswain Walter Brown and Medal Certificates to the remaining six crew members involved in the saving of the schooner Hina.

1977 Bronze Medal awarded to Coxswain Toby West and Medal Certificates to the remaining five crew members in connection with the rescue of six men from the jack up barge Mar dAroise.

1979 Special Framed Certificates in connection with the search and rescue involved with the Fastnet race difficulties.

1985 Thanks on Vellum to Coxswain Vivian Pentecost and Vellum Service Certificates to Acting 2nd. Coxswain Alan Barnes, motor mechanic Donald MacLellan, Assistant Mechanic Graham Pearce, D.L.A. Captain David Barnicoat, emergency mechanic Chris Price and lifeboat men Bjorn Thomason, John Barton and Michael Wilson. These awards were in connection with the service to the French fishing vessel St.Simeon.

1987 Framed Letter of Thanks to John Pentecost. At the time of the incident he went in his own boat Victory to the assistance of 5 people on board a dinghy which had capsized in choppy seas and a force 6 south westerly wind.

1987 Framed Letter of Thanks to Helmsman Royston Prynn and lifeboat men Dave Nicoll and Snowy Angove and to Coxswain Vivian Pentecost and the crew of the Elizabeth Ann. A Letter of Commendation was also received from the District Controller, Falmouth Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre. This was inconnection with the rescue from a dinghy at night of four persons including a 10 year old girl.

1992 Letter of Thanks to Coxswain Alan Barnes when he was On Scene Commander when the Falmouth and Fowey lifeboats, a helicopter and 7 other vessels where involved in a search for a man missing from the fishing vessel Wilhamina Maria. The Falmouth boat being at sea for nearly 15 hours.

1995 Thanks on Vellum to both Coxswain Alan Barnes and crew member Peter Wood. Vellum Service Certificates were awarded to other members of the crew, 2nd. Coxswain Mike Wilson, Deputy Coxswain Roger McClarity, Mechanic Tim Julian and lifeboat men Ken Avis, Alan Rowe and David Proud for their part in the service to catamaran Cloud Nine.

1999 Framed Letter of Thanks to Coxswain Alan Barnes and crew member Peter Wood. Letter of Thanks to remaining crew members, Deputy 2nd. Coxswain Roger McClarity, Mechanic Tim Julian, Assistant Mechanic John Murray, Chris Price, Snowy Angrove and John Palmer. This was for the rescue of the tug Dido and 2 crew from within The Manacles.
